Rummaging through my parents basement yesterday I came upon an old art project of mine from the 9th grade, I thought that it might be fun to share that with you here. It is always interesting to me to stumble upon things like this from your past as it allows you to reminisce a bit. Your roots, where your creativity started, how far you have come etc. It’s not perfect, but I am still amazed by the level of detail I was able to capture. To me it is still one of the best works I have ever completed.
Background – A 9th Grade Art Project
Back in my high school years I was a pretty diligent art student, I am quite sure that the courses were required but none the less I remember putting max effort into about 90% of the projects we were assigned. The other ten percent got schlepped together or where left incomplete, they just weren’t doing it for me. (I try to avoid that in my work now or at least be somewhat selective. Often to the frustration of my teacher I was well behind the rest of the class as the normal 2 week time frame just wasn’t enough when it came to a project that I was seriously interested in. If I was just about to finish a project chances where good that the class as a whole was at least a week in on the next.
Anyhow this particular project came along and if I remember correctly we were to choose a photo from the pages of a wide selection of magazines ranging from Teen to Life Magazine. The project was to recreate that photo (hand drawn) based on a grid. The lesson – proportion. We created a grid on the photo and then mapped the drawing to an art-board, with the plan that we would keep everything as close to scale as possible. The particular photo I choose was of course that of an old man with a long flowing beard. Now if any of you have ever drawn hair you will understand my toning it down a bit.
