Dropping Support for IE 6

I have been a bit out of the loop for the past week or so trying to stay on top of all of the projects I have recently undertaken, but I finally to a minute this morning to swift through the feeds and catch up on some reading. To my pleasant surprise I stumbled upon a nice little post by 37 Signals entitled “Phasing out Support for IE 6 Across all 37 Signals Products on August 15, 2008” and I felt that I needed to take a moment and applaud them in their decision.

I know that this move has been in the back of many web workers minds for quite awhile and some of us gave up on it a long time ago. For those of you that have ever viewed this site in IE 6 you will have probably noticed that I decided to stop worrying about PNG support when I released the redesign a few weeks back. Now I know that there are still quite a few out there that can’t seem to shake the IE6 monster but I wholeheartedly agree with their decision. IE7 has been out for a number of years now and with IE8 just around the corner and FireFox making the move into FF3, my question is what’s the hold up. Its fairly simple to do and most importantly it is free! If it is not something that you are willing to take on yourself then seek the help of your web designer, your tech savvy friend or get online and search out a tutorial, make the switch you will be happy you did.

Now I may not have much influence in the world of the web but I am willing to bet that with a heavy hitter like 37S making this decision that we will start to see the effects soon. So cheers to you 37 Signals in helping us to get one step closer to moving IE6 to the scrap pile.
